6 tips for autumn driving in Ohio

The cooler temperatures and changing leaves mean that the fall months are here. Drivers in Cincinnati need to prepare for some adjustments on the road that must come with the new season. Taking steps to remain safe is something every driver must do.

When drivers aren't handling their duties in a safe manner, accidents occur. This means that innocent people can suffer from injuries and can end up with damaged vehicles. Even if you are following these safety tips, other drivers might not and you can be struck.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Prepare for the sun glare. Just because the temperature isn't hot doesn't mean that the sun isn't going to beam down. Make sure you keep your windshield clean since dirt and debris can make it harder to see. Wearing polarized sunglasses can reduce the glare.
  • Beware of wet leaves. Falling leaves can line the streets, but don't think that you can drive normally. Try to drive slowly and keep your steering wheel steady. Fallen leaves that are damp or wet get slippery, which may lead to loss of control of your vehicle if you have to slam on the brakes.
  • Watch ahead of your vehicle for wildlife. This is a season when wildlife becomes more active. One animal to watch for is deer since they are seen more along the roadways during the autumn months. Hitting a deer means that you can lose control of your vehicle and might suffer from injuries to yourself and have damage to your vehicle. There is also a risk of other vehicles trying to avoid hitting the deer and striking you instead.
  • Drive carefully on bridges and in fog. Driving on bridges gets tricky during the fall. When temperatures drop, bridges can become slippery due to ice. You also need to watch for fog, which requires you to use your low beams and drive slowly.
  • Avoid rushing, especially in the rain. Leave yourself plenty of time to get to where you are going. Being able to take your time means you might not have to take any risks. The rain makes the road slick, and any vehicles fluids that are on the roads can make this worse.
  • Check the outside conditions. The autumn time change means that it will get darker earlier. Be prepared for this when you are heading out in the evenings, such as when you leave work.

If you are involved in an accident because another driver didn't follow proper fall driving styles, you might suffer greatly. Seeking compensation can minimize the damages that you have to deal with due to the wreck.
