What you need to know before applying for SSD benefits

Suffering from a disability can be challenging for someone who has worked their entire life. All of a sudden, you can't go to work anymore, and you are unsure of how you will support yourself and your family. Fortunately, qualified workers can apply for Social Security Disability benefits. Even though the application process is rigorous, Ohio residents shouldn't be intimidated, as long as they know the basics about applying.

As a recent article noted, the first thing to determine before submitting an application for SSD benefits is to know whether or not you are eligible to receive the benefits to begin with. Previous posts here have mentioned some of the requirements to be eligible for SSD benefits, such as having a qualifiable disability and having earned the requisite amount of work credits. Soon-to-be applicants can find out if they are likely to be found eligible for SSD benefits by having their own unique circumstances analyzed by an attorney.

Next, applicants need to know when to apply. In essence, this is determined by your disability. If you are finding that living with your disability means that maintaining employment has become impossible, it may be time to file an application for SSD benefits.

Lastly, it can be useful to explore just how much you will receive if you are approved to receive SSD benefits. In most cases, a simple calculation of the factors in your case will reveal the amount you should be eligible to receive if you are approved to receive Social Security Disability benefits.
